Transition Practice

Today's training was hours of fun for everyone ... got Jo and the kids involved. Not that anyone else did any training ... well Laura ran after me with the camera a couple of times at the start but the novelty soon wore off for her.

The training plan called for transition practice and it was down as eight sets. I decided on a simulated swim, a 10 minute bike and then a 5 minute run. The simulated swim consisted of me getting into my wetsuit and being hosed down by the kids. Adam must have been taking a lot of anger out on me cos he turned the hose to it's most powerful setting and aimed for my most delicate parts ... every time.

The transition area was in my shed and the bike took me a quarter way up Cheyne hill (went up fully once but took too long) and the run was right, to the end of Waimapu St, back to Fraser St and then back up the hill to our house/garage. Not too taxing but by rep 8 I was feeling that hill.

Learned a lot from the practice. Sorted out how to get my feet out of the bike shoes before I stop and pedal with feet on top of the shoes. Learned that it's easier to have the race belt done up and step into it rather than trying to do up under pressure. Learned that my compression socks stayed up and generally stayed OK under the wetsuit. Wasn't actually race conditions but I think they will be OK on during the swim.

Some pictures ....

I'm not saying I'm number 1 ... just indicating that this is the first set. I look a bit different at the end of the post when indicating rep 8

This is the most swimming I've done for ages :)
My calfs would have been screaming after 8 reps of running up that driveway without the compression socks. No matter how stupid they look, they work for me so I'll put up with that.

Jo reckons this shot makes me look gay. Hard to argue :(

The swim area was in a different location to the transition area so there was some running in between

Driveway from garage

Trying to get aero

Hill from garage. It's 'Cheyne' steep for about 5 metres.

Feet on top of the shoes. Attempted this at Tauranga last tri after seeing the bloke in front of me doing it. Wasn't too successful. Sorted it out today.

Halfway through going for the 'swim' of set 5

I kept on forgetting to undo the wetsuit after 'the swim' .. couple of times I got to 'transition' and my zip was fully up. I won't do that in the race!

Not happy

The last one ... thankfully

Every time ... No need to tell you Adam was holding the hose

I had enough bottles but didn't drink enough. My body fat went down to 11% (normally 17-20). Must have been dehydration. Not easy to drink when you're only on the bike 10 mins or running for 5. Have drunk lots since so should be OK.

The morning was great fun. Jo took most of the photos. She now wishes she had been in charge of the hose. Not quite sure what she means.
